Criminal Defense

"In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right...to a trial, by an impartial jury...and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him...and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense." (6th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution)

Criminal law involves clients who are being prosecuted by the state or federal government after being arrested and charged with either a misdemeanor or felony offense. An arrest, and subsequent criminal charge, comes with many foreseeable consequences including incarceration, a criminal record and/or serious fines. However, aside from the foreseeable, defendants are faced with many personal and sometimes overlooked strains including but not limited to the loss of employment, a strain on familial ties, house arrest, community service, and public scorn or humiliation.

With zealous representation, the above stresses can be greatly reduced. The Law Office of Shapiro & Mack, P.A. has years of experience trying and handling criminal cases of all varieties. Additionally, if charged with a Maryland DUI or DWI, one can lose his or her privilege to drive for up to one (1) year or more regardless of guilt or innocence. Additionally, there are many situations whereby the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) will take action against one's license seeking to suspend, revoke or otherwise restrict driving privileges. In some instances, one offense alone is enough to suspend or revoke one's license. Juvenile justice is the area of criminal law applicable to persons not old enough to be held responsible for criminal acts. Juveniles, or minors, are by law, any individual not yet 18 years of age. When a minor child is accused of a criminal act, the process is initiated by the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services and a hearing is held in their offices to determine whether the allegation can be handled on an informal level or whether the case needs to be referred to the criminal courts for prosecution.
